Red Gate Residency is an international artists residency program providing artists, curators, writers, and academics with the opportunity to live and create work in China.

Our objective is to provide facilities for artists to easily start their projects and offer a community in which they can participate as much as they like.

Red Gate Residency was founded in 2001, by the leading art gallery in China and has since been committed to the promotion of multicultural art dialogue within an immersion setting. Each year, we host over 70 artists from all over the world in the residency. In order to provide artists-in-residence with abundant opportunities to explore the local art scene, we also cooperate with art spaces and projects in Beijing and coordinate exhibitions and activities.

As a member of ResArtis, Residency Unlimited, Alliance of Artist Communities, TransArtists and China Residencies, we are committed to the promotion of multicultural arts dialogue within an immersion setting.

Eligible Applicants

There is no limitation by medium nor by nationality. We are open to multicultural and cross-disiplinary exchange. We work with artists who can organize their own funds and or have received grants to cover their residency.

Application Process

We ask that all applicants apply using our online application form. Portfolio and brief biography are required. Applicants also need to outline their residency objectives.

The length of residencies range from 1 month to 6 months (we prefer to take bookings by the month). Applications are received on a rolling basis. Although at times we may have last minute space available, our facilities commonly fill six months in advance so we encourage an early application.

Red Gate's apartments are situated on the north side of Beijing, where there are many Chinese and foreign artists studios. Nearby is Red Brick Museum and art districts: Caochangdi and 798. These apartments are situated in very local neighborhoods allowing the residents to experience the traditional and modern flavors of Beijing.

Each apartment/studio is self-contained complete with internet, wifi, hot water, fridge, gas stove, bottled drinking water, microwave, washing machine, heating and bedroom air conditioning and adequate kitchen gear, furnishings and linen. All utilities and weekly cleaning are included in program fee. Each artist is given a bicycle to explore the neighboring small villages and more deeply immerse themselves in the local culture.

Friends and family are welcome to visit.

The Red Gate Care Package covers airport pickup, a welcome packet with everything from local maps, guide books, and a taxi guide, orientation, internet hook-up and local phone, as well as a welcome dinner for you to meet the other residents. In addition, we also keep all our residents up to date on gallery openings and other occasions. We are here for our residents regarding any concerns or needs that they may have during their stay.

Additional Information

The apartment residency is ideal for writers, researchers, academics, curators, and artists who don’t need a large studio space.

Red Gate assists all participants to connect with the art scene, meet local Chinese artists and to source art materials. We provide the necessary support and encouragement to help you get the most out of your stay here. We help get you settled, show you around, tell you where to buy the best Peking Duck, which part of the Great Wall not to go to, and where and when the latest openings are. All residents are invited to Red Gate Gallery events, including private dinners after the openings.
