The M Residency allows writers with an interest in China to deepen their understanding of this vital and fascinating place. Established in 2009 and fully funded by the M Restaurant Group, the residency has its roots in M’s Shanghai and Beijing Literary Festivals, and aims to foster artistic, cultural and intellectual links between individuals and communities. From 2009 to 2016 the residency included one resident in Shanghai and one in India. In 2017, the residency included one resident based in Shanghai and one in Beijing. Starting in 2018, there will be one resident in Shanghai, China.
The residencies are open to all writers of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, screenplays and dramatic prose. There are no nationality restrictions, however, applicants should be over 21 years old at the time of application and be writing in English. Unpublished authors and past applicants are also eligible.
The M Literary Residency 2019-2020
Opening date: October 19th, 2018. Closing date: January 1, 2019 midnight GMT. Late applications will not be accepted. Results will be announced on March 14th, 2019 at the Shanghai International Literary Festival (March 14-27, 2019).

The residency spans 10 to 12 weeks in length.
Shanghai: a studio-style apartment.
Accommodation is centrally located and in the thick of a noisy city. Whilst it is intended that the writer should be seeking a period of sustained work, it must be noted that this will probably not be happening in very quiet surroundings. The accommodation provided in Shanghai is suitable only for single occupancy. The residency is intended for a single applicant only.
Beijing: a studio-style apartment. Accommodation is located on the Peking University campus. The accommodation provided in Beijing is suitable only for single occupancy. The residency is intended for a single applicant only.
Successful applicants will have their transportation costs to and from Shanghai covered, and will receive a total stipend of $1,000 USD to cover additional living costs during their stay.
Applicants are responsible for their own travel and/or medical insurance and travel.
The M Literary Residency aims to encourage interaction between talented artists and local communities and to foster an interest in the arts within the local communities of the host countries. The successful candidate must agree to participate in at least two events within the local community during their stay. This could be a talk or workshop at a school, college or at M’s Literary Salon.
The successful applicants will receive accommodation and a total stipend of USD $1,000 to cover additional costs during their stay. Applicants are responsible for their travel/medical insurance and visas. There is a possibility of assistance in covering transportation costs to and from the residencies, but this cannot be guaranteed; we recommend you find a source to cover transportation
Expectations and Conditions of Entry:
Remaining in Residence: It is expected that fellows remain in residence throughout the fellowship. Fellows must notify M Residency staff at the earliest opportunity if they expect to leave the residency for a period of more than one week. The residency is not a basis from which to travel.
Participation in Community Events: The M Literary Residency aims to encourage interaction between talented writers and local communities and to foster an interest in writing in their host countries. The successful candidate will be asked to participate in one or two events within the local community during their stay.
In the interest of fairness, applicants’ names must not appear on samples, synopses or statements of intent. A broad group of people read the applications and your anonymity is assured during the review process.
