Welcome to China Residencies' seasonal list of deadlines for residencies, call for papers, job opportunities & lots of different things you can apply for that have a connection to China and the greater Chinese diaspora, worldwide. In this ongoing pandemic, many opportunities are now happening online or remotely, and many others are contingent on international and local travel restrictions, as well as quarantine safety measures. Keep in mind that things might be different between now and the deadline, and between now and when the opportunity takes place!

RESIDENCIES + FUNDING:


Our 7th residency in Crystal Ruth Bell's honor is a six-month online remote residency around the theme Mediated 调和. With up to USD $10,000 of funding this year as well as ongoing mentorship and support, we welcome all your proposals for media arts projects. Submit before February 9th 2021.

Lingnan University in Hong Kong is seeking an artist in residence for their Spring 2021 semester. Apply by September 30.

The Asian Americans Writers Workshop is calling for emerging Asian American, Muslim and Arab writers to publish narrative nonfiction on the vibrant East Asian, South and Southeast Asian, Arab and West Asian, and North and East African communities of New York City. The 9 month 2021 Open City Fellowship offers $2,500, workshops and publishing opportunities to six fellows. Apply October 29th.

The Asian American Feminist Writing Workshop, running from February to May 2021, will focus on exploring the history of Asian American feminism as well as essential writings by feminists of color. Apply by November 1st.

Art Against Displacement is seeking submissions from artists to design a mural on the front gates of CSWA (Chinese Staff and Workers’ Association) and NMASS (National Mobilization Against Sweatshops) at 345 Grand Street in NYC. Apply by November 15

Gendai in Toronto is seeking proposals for collective models to improve racial equity sector-wide. Apply for the inaugural Gendai CO-OP 2021-2022 cohort by November 16.

The Asian American Arts Alliance is seeking submissions for a four month virtual residency (unfunded) for cohorts of 5 to 12 artists across all disciplines to meet for 8 sessions. Apply by November 22.

The W.O.W Project is calling for proposals for the 5th 店面 Storefront Residency Open Call in honor of 清明 Qingming, tomb-sweeping day, centering the theme of grief and grieving. The residency offers $1,000 artist honorarium, $800 for materials, studio space, exhibition space and project support. Apply before November 30th.

Loupe in Hong Kong is calling for jewellery designers to apply for their 2021 six-month mentoring programme with industry experts. International designers, apply by October 1 (housing and travel expenses not covered), local designers apply by December 1.

Para Site's NoExit Grant for Unpaid Artistic Labour will give HKD 20,000 unrestricted to 25 artists living in Hong Kong and artist of Hong Kong origin based abroad "at any stage of their careers, who are not receiving stable income from the market or academic work." Apply by December 7th.

Hosted Lucitopia Town·Zixi Qingliang Mountain and Curated by C-PLATFORM, Xi·Art Museum Generative Project is seeking submissions for their annual theme, "fantasy land" until July 31, 2021. Open to domestic and international residents, this residency will provide a travel subsidy of up to 5,000 RMB, lodging, shared studio space, food, and potential project material funding.

The British Council is offering grants of up to £50k to organisations in the UK and selected countries overseas (including China) to collaborate digitally on international projects. 

The COLING Project is seeking essays, analysis and art on the culture, politics, and emotions of how we are named takes an interdisciplinary approach and seeks both academic and creative contributions that will be convened in a published volume (both as a book and online publication) and exhibition. Deadline January 15, 2021.

The Bagri Foundation has an open call for illustrators and animators from Asia and the diaspora. 3 artists will receive £3000 to commission new work focused on the idea of 'change.' Submit by Feb 15 2021.

Asymmetry is calling for mid-career curators from Mainland China, Hong Kong or Taiwan to apply for for a six-month curatorial fellowship starting late September 2021 at Whitechapel Gallery in London, hosted at Delfina Foundation’s residency program. Apply by March 1 2021

Untitled Space near Shanghai has an open call for artists already in China for one to three month residencies in March & April & May. Apply for Spring 2021 residencies.

Cultural practitioners from Switzerland (artists, curators, arts workers) are invited to apply for up to three month fully-funded residencies at various spaces in Chengdu, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Suzhou, Chongqing, and Hong Kong. Cultural practitioners from China are invited to apply for residencies in Switzerland. Apply by March 10 2021.

A4 Art Museum in Chengdu is calling for artists to apply for one to three month residencies between May & December 2021, providing housing, flights, and 10,000 RMB stipend to 10 to 25 artists & collectives. Apply by March 15 2021

The Asian Cultural Council is calling for proposals in person and virtual exchanges between the US and China, Hong Kong & Macau, offering project budget funding between $7,000 USD and 20,000 USD. Apply by March 15.

Asian American Arts Alliance's Van Lier Fellowship supports Asian American musicians and composers living in NYC with $6,000 and an 8 month fellowship from May to December 2021. Apply by March 21 2021

A4's Jadin Wong Fellowship supports Asian American dancers under the age of 30 living in NYC with $6,000 and an 8 month fellowship from May to December 2021. Apply by March 21 2021

Driving The Human is seeking designers, artists, and scientists to submit prototype ideas that address sustainable and collective futures and eco-social renewal. Support of up to 4,000 euros + transport covered to participate in the event in Berlin in October 2021, with possible additional funding for 2022. Apply in English, Arabic, French, German, Chinese, Portuguese, Russian or Spanish by April 9.

Ongoing:

The Hong Kong Art Gallery Association's Artist Residency Abroad Funding Scheme provides up to HK$15,000 for Hong Kong artists seeking artist residencies abroad. Artists need to have been accepted to a residency program and apply one month before the start of the residency.

SUBMISSIONS:

Artist Susan Chen is seeking Asian Americans interested in sitting for a painting series about anti-Asian hate crimes in the United States. Participants will be compensated $23 USD/hour and sitting will happen from September through December.

Sine Theta Magazine is seeking submissions for their #17 "STICKY 粘" issue. Submit by October 3. 

Artists in the cities of Austin (United States), Braga (Portugal), Calí (Colombia), Changsha (China), Guadalajara (México), Karlsruhe (Germany), Kosice (Slovakia), Sapporo (Japan), Viborg (Denmark) and York (United Kingdom) are invited to submit to the open call: City to City 2020 Human Responsibility, hosted by Braga Media Arts. Each city will receive a budget of 1,000 euros. Submit by September 25.

Submit Asian and Pacific Islander recipes for Happy Family Night Market's Oral Traditions that highlight lesser-known dishes, techniques, and ingredients, especially those from underrepresented voices and cuisines —especially South Asian, SWANA, Central Asian, Pacific Islander, Indo-Carribean, and Indigenous recipes.

Architects, graphic designers, fashion designers can submit works for the Shenzhen Global Design Award.

The Wallace Foundation has a RFP for researchers studying initiatives that invest in BIPOC arts organizations. Funding ranges between $500k and $1m. Due January 4, 2021.

citizen.li is seeking queer Asian artists and creatives interested in participating as a subject for a documentary interview series showcasing Queer Asian artists and their practice. $50 honorarium. 

Somewhere We Are Human: An Anthology on Migration, Survival, and New Beginnings is seeking bold personal non-fiction essays and poems from migrants, asylum seekers, refugees and displaced people with experience in the United States. Contributors will receive $800 min. Deadline December 5, 2020. 

Asian American Writers' Workshop has seeking writing and art that imagine the end of mass incarceration and immigrant detention for A World Without Cages. Honorarium provided. Deadline December 1, 2020.

The WeChat Project is seeking thoughts, emotions, and reflections that young Chinese Americans and Asian Americans are experiencing as they navigate intergenerational relationships amidst a pandemic and fraught political circumstances for their holiday anthology. Deadline December 6, 2020.

The C.V. Starr Fund provides up to $500 for field work, research, and conference fees for Asian/Pacific/American Student Research for NYU students and scholars working on academic and/or community projects. Apply by September 23.

The CHAT 2021 Research Grant offers $60,000 HKD and encourages researchers to illustrate fresh perspectives on the industrial textile history of Hong Kong and beyond. Apply by January 31, 2021.
