Introduction

The Dali Art Factory is a three year old facility occupying a series of old factory buildings and encompasses galleries, a photography museum, bookshops, bar, coffee shops, workshops and studios. The Art Factory has positioning itself as a cultural hub in the region and is committed to providing a home for cultural interaction, creative expression and artistic discussion through a program of residencies, exhibitions, workshops and cultural events.
The residencies are designed to offer artists a unique opportunity to explore and react to one of Asia’s most stunning and culturally diverse regions through a program of events and excursions that offer a fascinating insight into the ‘real’ china that is hard to find in the mega cities. You will visit local villages that have changed little in decades and meet artists and craftspeople whose techniques have been passed down through generations. The Dali region is famous for its cloth dyeing, Silver smithing, carving, embroidery, paper cutting, music and its folk lore as well as being home to many international artists who have chosen to base themselves in the region.
Alongside our program of local excursions we also organise an optional tour of the Tibetan region in the north of Yunnan which we encourage our artists to experience for its cultural and scenic significance.
The residency program is based in our purposely built custom live/work facility that provides our artists with a comfortable en suite living space, separate studio and communal kitchen positioned in a quiet area on the art factory premises. Our facilities include a theatre/performance space, photographic darkroom, library, pottery studio, lecture room and galleries.
